Things in My House – To Have Practice

Things in the house

To have verb and house vocabularyLearning irregular verbs can be challenging, especially for beginning students. I like to give my students guided practice with new structures by getting them to write out their answers and then having them ask and write their classmates’ answers. This gives them a chance to prepare what they will say, so the discussion part isn’t so daunting. This is especially important for beginning students who are yet very comfortable with using the language.

Having their sentences to fall back on if they freeze up, can be a great help. This activity also gets students to practice first and third person forms of the verb to have in the positive and negative, so I can check to see how they’re doing with the structure.

This activity also reviews household items and would come nicely after this house vocabulary activity.

  1. Introduce or review forms of the verb have.
  2. Give students time to write down sentences about what they do and don’t have in their homes.
  3. Review the questions and practice pronunciation of them with the class.
  4. Model what the students will need to do by emphasizing that they will need to change the verb to the third person and also change possessive adjectives as well.
  5. Give the class time to talk around and ask their classmates about things they have/don’t have in their house.
  6. Collect and review to see how well the class is grasping uses of the verb to have.

English for Everyone's English Grammar Guide is an amazing visual reference grammar book. My students and I love it.

This is a workbook that goes with the above grammar guide. It's also visual and provides students with great practice for topics they're struggling with and need more practice on.
